Chinesischer Turm

Even though it was March when we arrived, the weather was beautiful. A few days even reached into the 70's. On one such day I decided to take a walk in English Gardens and get my first experience of the Chinesischer Turm or Chinese Tower. The original tower was completed in 1790 and modeled after the "Great Pagoda" in the Royal Botanic Gardens in London. On July 13, 1944, the original tower burned down after heavy bombing, but by 1952 a new tower, true to the original was erected.

The tower is 25 meters high and 19 meters wide at its widest point. The tower is surrounded by a Biergarten that has seating for 7000, the second largest in Munich. On most days in good weather it is quite full.

After exploring the tower area, I took a short stroll through the nearby parts of the park. It was a lovely afternoon and there were even some harbingers of spring.
